Biography

Noah Theriault is an interdisciplinary scholar working at the intersection of cultural anthropology, political ecology, and social history. His work aims to understand 'more-than-human' societies and the sociopolitical nature of ecosystems. He approaches environmental politics through the lens of struggles over resources and knowledge systems. Theriault employs ethnographic and historical methods to study tropical forest communities affected by global biodiversity conservation initiatives. His long-term project examines the collision of indigenous rights, biodiversity conservation, and capitalism on Palawan Island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve facing rapid socio-ecological change due to settler colonization and extractive industries. His publications have highlighted the resilience and creativity of Palawan's indigenous communities in confronting powerful forces of change. In 2016, Theriault connected with the Creatures Collective to collaborate with a diverse range of scholars, practitioners, and activists to contest the colonial foundations of prevailing environmental paradigms. He has initiated a new study of Manila's 'traffic crisis,' which reflects the deeply uneven social, political, and ecological landscape of the city. This project aims to provide new insights into urban political ecology, environmental history, and infrastructure, promoting collaborative community-based methods in urban environmental studies.
