Biography

Professor Noël Sugimura is an Associate Professor and Tutorial Fellow in English at St John's College, University of Oxford. His research interests primarily focus on seventeenth-century literature and culture, specifically the Restoration and John Milton. He teaches and researches at the intersection of early modern philosophy, intellectual history, and literature. His published work includes the book 'Matter Glorious: The Trial of Spiritual Materiality in Paradise Lost,' which delves into the metaphysics of Milton's 'Paradise Lost'. He is currently working on another book titled 'Perplexity and Contending Passions', which explores the reception history of 'Paradise Lost' in the context of early readers and the cultural milieu of the eighteenth century Enlightenment, under contract with Oxford University Press. Additionally, he is editing William Empson's 'Milton's God' for OUP. Sugimura has also published extensively on early modern dramatists and poets beyond Milton and is open to supervising a wide range of topics.
