Nongnuj Tanphaichitr is currently a senior scientist emeritus at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Over the past 50 years, her research has focused on mammalian reproduction. She completed her Ph.D. in biochemistry and cell biology at the University of Iowa and received a B.Sc. in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota. Her main research directions include the development of multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) agents aimed at protecting women from unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). She is notable for her discovery of LL-37, a cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide with spermicidal and anti-STI activities. Currently, she is working on formulations to effectively deliver peptides to the female reproductive tract. Tanphaichitr's research has received continuous funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and several other organizations. Her work is critical in understanding the molecular mechanisms behind sperm-egg interactions, which aims at developing non-hormonal contraceptives and biomarkers for gamete fertilizing ability. She has led various grants focusing on antimicrobial peptides and their applications in reproductive health.
