Biography

Nora Ayanian is a faculty member at Brown University where she serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science. She is also the director of the Automatic Coordination Teams Lab. Ayanian received her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining Brown, she was an Andrew Erna Viterbi Associate Professor at the University of Southern California and a postdoctoral associate at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). Her research focuses on the development of end-to-end solutions for coordinating teams of robots, allowing for high-level task specifications to be translated into executable code for individual robots or teams through intuitive multitouch controls. Ayanian's work addresses critical aspects of multirobot systems, including task assignment, path planning, and control, which have applications in a variety of fields such as mobile sensor networks, manufacturing, and emergency response. She received recognition as a 2016 Innovator under 35 by MIT Technology Review, and she has been awarded the NSF CAREER award among others for her contributions to automated planning and robotics. Ayanian has been celebrated for her mentorship and her innovative teaching methods in robotic systems.
