Biography

Nora Szarka has over 20 years of experience in fields related to decision support and strategic biomass use for regional development. She completed her Master of Science in Environmental Engineering at the University of Miskolc in Hungary and earned her Ph.D. at the University of Leoben in Austria. Between 2001 and 2007, she worked as a researcher at the University of Leoben, where she focused on renewable energy concepts. Her international experience includes working as a project engineer at the University of Concepción in Chile from 2007 to 2010, contributing to environmental energy research. From 2011 until 2025, she led the working group on "Biomass Energy Systems" at the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ), where she developed tools for strategic planning and decision-making to support the establishment of a sustainable bio-based economy and negative emission technologies. Dr. Szarka actively participates as a project evaluator and reviewer for scientific journals. In 2025, she joined the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary.
