Biography

Norm Fennema is a lecturer at the University of Victoria with a focus on Canadian History, American History, and North American Religion. He lives in Victoria with his wife of 26 years and their two children. His research centers on cultural identity and pluralism, particularly in relation to North American religion. His dissertation examined government control of religious broadcasting in Canada since the 1980s, highlighting the evolving relationship between religion, society, and government in the twentieth century. He previously served as an assistant professor at a small college in Ontario and has taught various courses including seminar film on Western history, comparative studies of American and Canadian West, as well as African American history and the historical role of religion in America. Norm has taught survey courses covering Canadian and American history from colonial times to the post-Civil War era and the 20th Century, as well as independent study courses in Canadian and American topics. He is also involved in teaching courses related to Canadian social policy and culture as part of the Canadian Studies division at UVic Continuing Studies, and he provides online courses for Thompson Rivers University.
