Dr. Norma Day Vines

Biography

Norma L. Day-Vines is a professor at the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University, specializing in Counseling and Educational Studies. Her research focuses on the importance of multiculturalism as a crucial tool in providing culturally competent counseling and educational services to clients and students from marginalized groups. She examines the measurement of attitudes and discusses the contextual dimensions of race, ethnicity, and culture, developing strategies to reduce barriers to well-being for ethnic minority clients and students. Day-Vines has provided consultation to school districts across the nation to address issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her work has been published in prestigious counseling journals including the Journal of Counseling Development, the Journal of Multicultural Counseling Development, and the Journal of Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development. In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the Exemplary Diversity Leadership Award in 2013 by the Association for Multicultural Counseling Development, and she received the Excellence in Teaching Award from Johns Hopkins University in 2018. In 2019, she was honored with a Presidential Citation from the American Counseling Association for her scholarship in multiculturalism. Day-Vines has also received the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from North Carolina State University's College of Education. She has collaborated on significant grants, including a $4.7 million grant from the Department of Education to train school counselors to address the mental health needs of Pre-K-12 students in high-needs school districts.
