Dr. Norman Etherington

Biography

Norman Etherington has published extensively on European imperialism, African history, the British Empire, Christian missions, and the history of Southern Africa. His academic tenure includes visiting posts at Columbia University, the School of Oriental and African Studies, the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, Rhodes University, and the University of Cape Town. He served as a research associate at the University of South Africa and received recognition for his service on the National Trust Heritage Council in Western Australia. Etherington was the President of the National Trust of South Australia and has also held the position of past President of the Australian Historical Association. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia and the Royal Historical Society of the United Kingdom, as well as the Royal Geographical Society. In 2013, he was made a member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his substantial contributions to the history community. His research expertise spans keywords such as African history, colonialism, and imperialism. Etherington has led numerous research projects focused on the impact of colonial narratives and the experiences of Indigenous populations during the expansion of Christianity.
