Biography

Norman Paton is a Professor of Information Management at the University of Manchester. He has a BSc Honours in Computing Science and a PhD in Computing Science, both from the University of Aberdeen, obtained in 1986 and 1989 respectively. Over the years, he has worked in various roles including as a lecturer at Heriot-Watt University and has held significant positions such as Head of School, Director of Teaching Strategy, and Director of Research. Paton has supervised around 30 PhD students and 2 MPhil students to completion. His research interests are focused on distributed information management, particularly in challenging environments, developing effective techniques to improve computer support for data-intensive applications. He is currently investigating autonomic systems that enable distributed systems to adapt their behavior in response to changes in the execution environment, as well as data integration techniques to reduce costs associated with developing and maintaining applications that combine data from multiple databases. His recent projects include the EPSRC Programme Grant 'Adding Value to Data' and a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Peak.ai, illustrating his commitment to practical solutions in information management.
