Biography

Nuno F. Bandeira is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, with a joint appointment at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science with a focus on bioinformatics from the University of California, San Diego. His research interests center around computational mass spectrometry and bioinformatics, specifically algorithmic statistical problems involving proteomics and the use of mass spectrometry instruments to identify and quantify proteins and their post-translational modifications. A significant part of his recent work has been derived from the novel Spectral Networks paradigm introduced by his research group, marking a departure from traditional approaches to spectrum interpretation. This innovative approach enables the assembly and consensus interpretation of multiple spectra of overlapping peptides, addressing new challenges in reconstructing protein sequences from tandem mass spectrometry data. His research also encompasses big data science and crowdsourcing as applied to therapeutic molecules and natural products.
