Biography

Nuno Porto is an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, where he holds a joint appointment as Curator of African South American collections within Museum Anthropology. He received his PhD from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, focusing on the intersection of colonialism, science, and museum culture. Nuno has taught various subjects related to social anthropology, material culture, critical museology, visual culture, and photography, particularly within the context of African studies. His academic work has been published across ten countries in four languages, and he has coordinated the Graduate Program in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Coimbra. Nuno's recent curatorial projects include 'Sankofa: African Routes, Canadian Roots' and 'Amazonia – Rights Nature', exploring the significance of indigenous knowledge and contemporary African identities. He teaches courses on African art and the arts of the African diaspora, integrating critical debates on social justice and representation in contemporary practices.
