Biography

Nuno Porto is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and serves as the Curator for Africa and South America at the Museum of Anthropology (MOA). He received his PhD from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and has held a joint appointment in Museum Anthropology, focusing on the African and South American collections. Before joining UBC in 2012, Nuno taught subjects related to social anthropology, material culture, critical museology, visual culture, and photography in African studies at the University of Coimbra. His research has been published in multiple languages across ten countries, and he coordinated the Graduate Program in Social and Cultural Anthropology from 2006 to 2011. Nuno also previously served as Director of the Museum Anthropology at the University of Coimbra from 2002 to 2006, where he developed temporary exhibitions that engaged with ethnographic installation. His PhD dissertation examined the connections between colonialism, science, and museum culture and was recognized with an award from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He has collaborated on various projects that address the nuances of African identities through contemporary art, including curating significant exhibitions at MOA. He teaches courses related to African art, engaging students with key debates concerning art in Africa and the African diaspora.
