Biography

Nuno Porto received his PhD from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, specializing in Museum Anthropology with a focus on African South American collections. He holds a joint appointment as Curator at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he has been a faculty member since 2012. Prior to this, Nuno taught at the University of Coimbra on subjects related to social anthropology, material culture, critical museology, and visual culture. His work has been published in four languages across ten countries. He coordinated the Graduate Program in Social and Cultural Anthropology from 2006 to 2011 and served as the Director of Museum Anthropology at the University of Coimbra from 2002 to 2006, where he developed a series of temporary exhibitions that utilized ethnographic installations. His PhD dissertation examined the intersections of colonialism, science, and museum culture, and was awarded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. His recent curatorial projects, such as 'Sankofa: African Routes, Canadian Roots,' emphasize the importance of African Black contemporary art and heritage. Additionally, his teaching includes courses that highlight key debates in African art and its diasporas, contributing to UBC's African Studies Minor.
