Dr. Nurina Merdikawati

Biography

Nurina Merdikawati is a lecturer at the Indonesia Project, Crawford School of Public Policy, at the Australian National University. Her primary research areas are applied microeconomics and development economics, focusing specifically on labor economics and gender issues. Merdikawati has published various journal articles and book chapters in esteemed outlets such as the World Bank Economic Review and the Journal of Development Studies. She has conducted research primarily in Indonesia while also exploring topics related to Australia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Merdikawati earned her BA (Hons) in Economics from Nanyang Technological University, her Master's in Public Policy from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, and her PhD in Economics from the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University. Before joining the Indonesia Project, she held positions as a Research Fellow at the Global Institute for Women's Leadership and as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) in Southeast Asia. Her ongoing research investigates the effects of women's participation in politics and government programs, aiming to change gender norms and enhance women's labor market outcomes and access to social assistance.
