Biography

Oana Balmau is an Assistant Professor at McGill University in the School of Computer Science, where she leads the Data-Intensive Storage Computer Systems Laboratory (DISCS Lab). Her research focuses on storage technologies, particularly persistent memory technologies and their management for machine learning, data science, and edge computing workloads. Oana completed her PhD in Computer Science at the University of Sydney in 2020 under the supervision of Professor Willy Zwaenepoel, where her dissertation centered on the design and implementation of efficient key-value stores for future hardware performance requirements. She obtained her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Computer Science from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). In addition to her role at McGill, she is an affiliate academic member at Mila (the Quebec AI Institute) and serves as the chair of the MLPerf Storage working group. Oana's work has been recognized with several awards, including the CORE John Makepeace Bennett Award 2021 for her doctoral dissertation and an honorable mention for the ACM SIGOPS Dennis M. Ritchie Doctoral Dissertation Award. Her research contributions include various open-source systems and numerous influential publications in prominent conferences and journals.
