Dr. Oded Stein

Biography

Oded Stein received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 2013 and his Master of Science in Mathematics in 2015 from ETH Zurich, where he was supervised by Ralf Hiptmair and awarded the ETH Excellence Scholarship. In 2020, he earned his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Columbia University, working under the supervision of Eitan Grinspun. His research focuses on smoothness energies in geometry processing. Prior to his current position, Stein was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT’s Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab from 2020 to 2022, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation’s Early Postdoc.Mobility fellowship. He joined the Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering in 2023, where he is advancing research in geometry processing, numerical mathematics, optimization, simulation, differential geometry, and algebraic topology. Stein’s academic journey and research have prepared him to guide newcomers through the complexities of academia in computer science and mathematics, helping them with questions about planning their academic careers, applying to graduate school, and securing research internships.
