Biography

Offiong Aqua is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at NYU Steinhardt. He holds a joint appointment in the departments of Physical Therapy and Communicative Sciences and Disorders. Originally from Nigeria, he graduated with an M.D. from the Faculty of Medicine at Friendship University in Moscow, Russia, in 1986, and completed postgraduate training in Facio-Maxillary Surgery. Aqua has extensive experience in academic settings, having been a faculty member at Mercy College, where he co-chaired the Department of Natural Sciences and established programs in Occupational and Physical Therapy. His research focuses on global health care issues affecting Africa, and he has been instrumental in creating partnerships between NYU and the Ghana Ministry of Health, as well as other organizations. His work aims to improve health systems and training capacities in the region. Aqua has received the Teaching Excellence Award from the Steinhardt School and is involved in developing health-related courses abroad, including 'A Global Disability Course' in Ghana. He is actively engaged in improving healthcare systems in Nigeria, particularly in the oil-producing regions, and is dedicated to educating students in speech-language pathology and physical therapy.
