Dr. Ognen Petroff

Biography

Ognen Petroff is an Associate Professor Emeritus of Neurology with a focus on epilepsy and seizures at Yale University’s School of Medicine. He obtained his MD from Johns Hopkins University, and his career includes clinical appointments as an attending physician at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Yale Medicine, and Greenwich Hospital. His research primarily investigates the relationship between GABA levels and cortical excitability, particularly how alterations in GABA metabolism relate to the pathogenesis of epilepsy. He has utilized non-invasive magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study GABA metabolism in the human cerebral cortex and has conducted extensive research on the neurochemical basis of seizures, particularly in relation to glutamate and GABAergic function. His findings suggest a significant role of homocarnosine in decreasing neuronal excitability and affecting seizure control, demonstrating his contribution to understanding the intricate biochemistry of epilepsy.
