Dr. Olaf Schenk

Biography

Olaf Schenk is a Professor at the Institute of Computing within the Faculty of Informatics at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Switzerland. He serves as the director of the Institute of Computing and the Master in Computational Science program. Olaf is an adjunct member of the Computer Systems Institute at USI and graduated in Applied Mathematics from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. He earned his PhD in 2001 from the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich and was awarded a venia legendi from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Basel in 2009. His research focuses on applied algorithms, computing, and software tools for high-performance scientific computing. Olaf has been elected a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and holds senior memberships in IEEE and ACM. He contributes as an associate editor for the ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software and is involved in the editorial board of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing. Olaf has played significant roles in chairing international conferences and has co-won the SIAM Supercomputing Prize in 2023 for outstanding contributions in parallel scientific engineering computing. He also founded and directs Panua Technologies Sagl, a company that specializes in high-end software solutions for prediction, simulation, optimization, and graph analytics.
