Biography

Olav Velthuis is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in economic sociology and cultural sociology. Currently, he serves as the head of the department. His research interests encompass the globalization of art markets, the interrelations of market and gift exchange, private art museums, and the socio-technical dimensions of markets for adult content. He has conducted cross-comparative studies on the emergence and development of art markets in BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). Velthuis's project has been financed by a VIDI-grant from the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO). Before moving to the University of Amsterdam, he worked for years as a Staff Reporter for the Dutch daily de Volkskrant and served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Konstanz, as well as a Post-Doc researcher at Columbia University. He is the author of 'Talking Prices: Symbolic Meanings of Prices on the Market for Contemporary Art' (Princeton University Press, 2005), which received the Viviana Zelizer Distinguished Book Award from the American Sociological Association in 2006. His academic work appears in leading social science journals and has been cited by international media. Velthuis has delivered keynote lectures and workshops at various national and international cultural institutions, including Tate Modern and Art Basel.
