Biography

Olayinka Shiyanbola is an Associate Professor within the Social Administrative Sciences Division at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She serves as the Director of Graduate Studies in Health Services Research Pharmacy and is the Associate Director of the Collaborative Center for Health Equity. Additionally, she is the Director of the Success Together Reaching Independence, Diversity, and Empowerment (STRIDE) initiative. Her research focuses on diabetes self-management and medication use among underserved populations, with a significant emphasis on health literacy and health equity. Dr. Shiyanbola conducts diabetes-related research activities that investigate culturally influenced diabetes self-management behaviors and medication adherence among African Americans with type 2 diabetes. She has successfully implemented community-based diabetes self-management programs tailored for African Americans through her Peers LEAD initiative. Furthermore, her work explores how pharmacists can implement brief health-literacy and psychosocial support interventions for patients living with diabetes. Dr. Shiyanbola is actively involved in developing culturally appropriate tools that address illness perceptions in African Americans with type 2 diabetes, and her projects also longitudinally examine changes in medication adherence over time within Black populations.
