Olga Shemyakina is an Associate Professor in the School of Economics at Georgia Institute of Technology. Her research examines the effects of violent conflict on subsequent instances of protracted economic and political instability, particularly in relation to household behavior across geographical and institutional settings. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Southern California in 2007 and joined the School of Economics the same year. Her research interests include applied microeconomics, development economics, labor economics, armed conflict, health, education, and gender. Recent studies have explored the short- and long-term impacts of armed conflict on health and education outcomes for children, subjective well-being, migration, marriage, and labor market outcomes, with a particular focus on the gender-differentiated impacts of conflict. She validates her research findings using multiple sources of data to measure conflict effects. In addition, she is a Senior Affiliate at the Households in Conflict Network and an IZA Research Fellow. Throughout her career, she has also worked on research consulting projects for the World Bank, focusing on the interconnections between armed conflict, education, and gender.
