Dr. Oliver Broad

Biography

Oliver Broad is a Senior Research Fellow at University College London's Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources, where he is part of the Institute for Sustainable Resources. He focuses on developing and using optimization modeling frameworks to support long-term energy planning. His main research interests center around Whole Systems Approaches to assess future energy pathways and understand the implications of energy policy at national, regional, and local levels. Key topic areas include renewable energy, residential and industrial heat decarbonization, biomass and bioenergy, carbon capture and storage, and achieving low energy demand. His work addresses the interconnected global nature of climate challenges, engaging in both domestic UK and international contexts, particularly in the Global South. Acknowledging the inherently social nature of the energy-climate problem, he increasingly participates in research that bridges modeling with social science.
