Oliver Bühler is particularly interested in challenging growth conditions for urban trees. His ambition as a researcher is to develop tools that improve the establishment rates and vitality of roadside trees. His main research interest lies in the delicate water balance pertaining to urban trees. Over the years, Oliver has worked on the dispersion of pests and diseases across Europe, investigated the effects of irrigation on street trees, and contributed to the evaluation of street tree establishment concepts. Interactions between green infrastructure and urban climate receive increasing attention, and Oliver has addressed this issue by working on the selection of tree species and cultivars that can grow in a changing climate, as well as investigating the effects of green infrastructure on the urban heat island effect in Copenhagen. In addition to his research, Oliver teaches a 15 ECTS course titled 'Plants and Urban Climate' as part of the Urban Landscape Engineer program offered by the Forest & Landscape College. He also takes care of the Urban Tree Arboretum, a collection of trees used in urban areas.
