Biography

Oliver Hailes is an Assistant Professor at LSE Law School since January 2023, specializing in international law. He is an Assistant General Editor for ICSID Reports since 2018 and has extensively researched various aspects of international law. Hailes holds a BA in Politics and an LLB with Honours from the University of Otago and completed his LLM in International Law (First Class) and a PhD in Law at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. His doctoral thesis focused on the application of customary international law in investment treaty arbitration, particularly regarding the economic rights of states relating to expropriation, taxation, and regulation. His publications have delved into the historical contexts of investment treaty disputes, exploring connection points with general international law and addressing issues like public health and natural resource management. Prior to joining LSE, he clerked for an appellate judge, worked in commercial litigation, and engaged with NGOs on climate and trade issues. Hailes also served as the co-Editor-in-Chief of the Cambridge International Law Journal and is a Research Associate at the PluriCourts Centre of Excellence at the University of Oslo, teaching graduate workshops in international investment law. He has been involved with the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and co-chairs masterclasses in international arbitration.
