Biography

Oliver Jagoutz joined the Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) faculty at MIT in 2008 and has served as the department chair for the Program in Geology, Geochemistry, and Geobiology from 2021 to 2024. He has been appointed the director of the MIT Earth Resources Laboratory. Jagoutz studied Chemistry and Geology at the University of Mainz and participated as a European Union Erasmus Scholar at ETH Zurich. He earned his PhD in 2004 from ETH Zurich, focusing on studies with J.P. Burg, and furthered his research at the Tokyo Institute of Technology under Shige Maruyama. Prior to his tenure at MIT, he completed postdoctoral research with Othmar Müntener at the University of Bern. Fieldwork is central to Jagoutz's research, and he typically dedicates several months a year to various global locations, including Greece, Zimbabwe, Switzerland, Italy, Pakistan, India, Mongolia, and Morocco. His research interests include magmatic processes, oceanic crust evolution, carbon sequestration, and the relationship between tectonics and climate variations.
