Professor Rackham gained Bachelor of Science and Doctorate in Biochemistry at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. In 2003, he relocated to the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK, working as a MRC Career Development Fellow alongside Professor Jason Chin to systematically re-engineer genetic code. He established his own research group in Western Australia in 2006 as an NHMRC Peter Doherty Fellow. He has been awarded the Wenner-Gren Foundation Fellowship, ARC Future Fellowship, Marshall Medal, and was inducted into the European Inventor Hall of Fame. Rackham's research focuses on RNA, synthetic biology, mitochondrial biogenesis, gene editing, and the interaction of RNA-protein in living cells. He is a founding member and past President of Synthetic Biology Australasia and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals 2015. He has attracted funding for his research from organizations including ARC, Cancer Council WA, and NHMRC.
