Biography

Olivia Vázquez-Medina is an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Oxford and a fellow of Wadham College. Her academic journey includes a Licenciatura in Hispanic Language and Literature from Universidad Veracruzana, as well as MSt and DPhil degrees in Spanish from the University of Oxford. Her professional experience encompasses a permanent Lecturer position in Hispanic Studies at Royal Holloway prior to joining Oxford in September 2015. Vázquez-Medina's research focuses on contemporary and modern Spanish American fiction, examining how contemporary women writers engage with critical issues like environmental degradation, social inequality, and gender violence through innovative storytelling techniques. Her work interrogates the notion of 'disquietude' in literature and encourages readers to confront discomfort brought forth by these themes. She has taught various undergraduate papers at Wadham and St Hugh’s, focusing on Spanish language and literature, and supervises graduate students in special subjects related to the body in Spanish American fiction. Vázquez-Medina is actively involved in the academic community and encourages potential graduate applicants interested in her research areas.
