Biography

Olivier Hekster researches Roman history, focusing on the impact and functioning of the Roman Empire in the wider world. His work particularly emphasizes the power imagery of Roman emperors. His further research interests include the theater, gladiatorial games, and the history of the city of Rome. Hekster is a member of the Academia Europaea and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and chairs the international Impact Empire network. He has held fellowships at Merton College, Oxford (2002-2004), was a Humboldt Fellow at the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy in Munich (2012-2013), and a WWU Fellow at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (2020-2021). He will serve as a Visiting Professor at the Cambridge Lab for Ancient World Studies in 2025. His research has yielded several peer-reviewed articles and he has received multiple research grants, including the Ammodo KNAW Award in the humanities and the NWO Vici grant for his project on Roman power and changing societies.
