Dr. Olivier Vallerand

Biography

Olivier Vallerand is an architect and historian of the built environment with a focus on creating inclusive environments that consider ethnocultural origins, gender, age, physical conditions, and disabilities. His research particularly addresses the impact of sexual orientation and gender identity on the experience and design of architectural and urban spaces. This interest has led him to explore ethical challenges in design and planning, especially regarding the role of architects and designers in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. Through this lens, he has developed expertise in anti-oppressive, feminist, and queer pedagogies applicable to planning disciplines. Outside academia, he serves as the research coordinator for GRIS-Montréal, which aims to enhance knowledge of sexual and gender diversity and facilitate the integration of LGBTQ+ individuals into society. He collaborates with a committee of researchers, volunteers, and staff to develop insights into the implications of testimonials as an intervention method in educational settings, as well as their effects on the overall health and engagement of volunteers. Vallerand holds a PhD in Architecture from McGill University and has been recognized with several awards for his contributions to interior design education.
