Biography

Professor Bukola Salami received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Windsor in 2004, followed by a Master of Nursing and a PhD in Nursing, both from the University of Toronto in 2008 and 2014, respectively. As of July 2023, she holds the position of Full Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Cumming School of Medicine. In December 2023, she was appointed as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Black Racialized Peoples' Health. Salami has previously held a similar rank at the University of Alberta and has directed the Intersections Gender Signature Area, Office of the Vice President Research. Her research focuses on policies and practices that shape migrant health and Black people’s health, participating in 90 funded studies totaling $230 million. She has significantly contributed to projects addressing various health issues faced by Black communities and has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers. Furthermore, she founded the African Child Youth Migration Network and the Black Youth Mentorship Leadership Program, aiming to empower Black youth in Canada. Salami has received multiple awards for her research excellence and community engagement, including the Sigma Theta Tau International Emerging Nurse Researcher Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.
