Biography

Omar K. Jamil, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago, specializing in gastroenterology. His clinical interests include nutrition, small bowel disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Dr. Jamil's work emphasizes the integration of diet and nutrition-based therapy in the care of patients with IBD, with a systematic approach to optimize treatment for medically complex patients preparing for major abdominal surgery. He completed a combined Internal Medicine–Pediatrics residency and subsequently trained in Adult Gastroenterology at the University of Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident and Chief Fellow. His fellowship research focused on a clinical trial evaluating proprietary MRI-based technology for quantifying sarcopenia. Dr. Jamil's ongoing academic interests involve malnutrition assessment, sarcopenia, and the development of structured perioperative nutritional optimization pathways for patients with IBD and complex gastrointestinal diseases. As the Associate Medical Director of Clinical Nutrition, he collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to advance evidence-based nutrition care, paying particular attention to enteral and parenteral nutrition strategies, as well as the development of malnutrition screening protocols. Dr. Jamil provides comprehensive care for general gastroenterology and IBD at UChicago Medicine’s Hyde Park campus and Hinsdale location.
