Biography

Omar Mahroo is a Professor of Retinal Neuroscience at University College London (UCL) and a consultant ophthalmologist specializing in inherited retinal diseases at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He currently leads the Retina-Uveitis-Oncology Module of the MSc in Ophthalmology at UCL and directs the Moorfields Macula Course. Mahroo manages the Moorfields Electrophysiology Service and serves as a moderator and invited speaker at international meetings. He is involved in expert scientific advisory panels for NICE and supervises research students and post-doctoral scientists, alongside clinical supervision of residents and international fellows. He completed his medical degree and PhD at the University of Cambridge and conducted post-doctoral research at both Cambridge and Australian National University. His PhD focused on the physiology of the human rod and cone photoreceptors. Mahroo has received significant funding and awards, including a £1.1 million grant from Wellcome Trust and distinctions for teaching excellence. He has authored over 140 publications in renowned journals and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and the Physiological Society.
