Biography

Omar McDoom is an Associate Professor in Comparative Politics at the London School of Economics. He is a comparative political scientist with expertise in conflict, violence, and security, particularly focusing on genocides, civil wars, ethnic conflicts, insurgencies, terrorism, and guerrilla warfare. His research interests also encompass ethnic and religious integration, as well as strategies to promote coexistence and cooperation within diverse, multi-ethnic societies. McDoom has particular area expertise in Central Africa—especially Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda—and is developing further knowledge of Southeast Asian politics, particularly in the Philippines. Before joining LSE, he held research fellowships at Harvard University's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and Oxford University's Department of Politics and International Relations. His professional experience includes roles as a Policy Officer at the World Bank and as a Legal Officer for the Government of Guyana, in addition to electoral missions for OSCE and the UN. He co-founded a non-profit organization focused on developing leadership potential in children affected by Northern Uganda's civil war. McDoom holds law degrees from King's College London and Université de Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne, as well as a Master's degree in International Development Studies from George Washington University and a Ph.D. in Development Studies from the London School of Economics. He is a non-practicing attorney admitted in New York.
