Biography

Onésimo Teotónio Almeida, born in S. Miguel, Azores, in 1946, is a Professor Emeritus at Brown University where he has taught since 1975. He graduated from Portuguese Catholic University, Lisbon in 1972, and received his MA in 1977 and PhD in Philosophy in 1980 from Brown University. His areas of expertise include Portuguese Cultural Intellectual History, Portuguese national identity, and Portuguese-American literature studies. He served as Chair of the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies from 1992 to 2003 and has authored numerous scholarly works, including 'O Século dos Prodígios' and 'Obsessão da Portugalidade'. His research interests cover a wide array of topics, including intellectual and cultural history of Portugal, ideology, and philosophy within the social sciences. Almeida has received various awards including the Honorary Chairs' Award for Lifetime Achievement in Humanities from the Rhode Island Council and was honored with an honorary degree from the University of Aveiro, Portugal. His works contribute significantly to the understanding of Portuguese literature and culture, fostering dialogue between academic disciplines and bridging cultural gaps through his translations and editorial projects.
