Biography

Onookome Okome is a Professor in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta, specializing in English and Film Studies. He holds an MA and PhD from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and has over twenty years of research experience in Anglophone African literature, especially Nigerian literature. His work includes significant studies on the literature of Nigeria's Niger Delta and African performance studies. Okome has edited several books and essays in the field of African studies, including a noted volume on environmental rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. His recent research focuses on African popular culture and the concept of 'art of everyday life' in the context of Africa. He has also contributed to revitalizing discussions around popular culture in Africa through key publications. In teaching, Okome covers race literature, colonialism in 20th century Africa, and postcolonial literature. He is part of a research project titled 'Expressive Cultures of the African Diaspora' alongside notable scholars from York University, Ontario.
