Biography

Onur Günay is an anthropologist and documentary filmmaker specializing in political medical anthropology, social critical theory, and Middle Eastern studies. Currently serving as a lecturer and Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Anthropology at Princeton University, his work explores the complex logics of ethno-racial violence, statecraft, and religious governance in contemporary Turkey, particularly in relation to the Kurdish insurgency and the war on drugs. His ethnographic research, which spans thirty months, documents the experiences of Kurdish migrant workers within various societal contexts. Günay has published research in notable journals and has held positions such as a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. In addition to his academic work, he has made significant contributions to the realm of documentary filmmaking, notably through his film 'Garod,' which reflects on musical traditions in the context of historical trauma.
