Biography

Orestis Adamidis studied civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, specializing in geotechnical engineering. His diploma thesis numerically investigated the rocking response of slender structures on rigid, elastic, and inelastic ground. He then moved to the University of Cambridge where he completed his PhD, examining the response of shallow-founded structures to earthquake-induced liquefaction using dynamic centrifuge experiments. These experiments captured deformation mechanisms that develop in liquefiable soil foundations, highlighting significant aspects of liquefiable soil response and the importance of co-seismic drainage. Following his PhD, Orestis was awarded a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at ETH Zurich, focusing on element testing of liquefiable materials and the numerical modeling of liquefaction-related problems. In July 2020, he was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford and is a Tutorial Fellow at St Catherine’s College. His research interests currently include the element-level soil response under partially drained conditions, liquefaction susceptibility of layered deposits, and the interaction between liquefiable soil and structures during seismic events.
