Biography

Oriana Skylar Mastro is a Center Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University. Her research primarily focuses on Chinese military security policy, Asia-Pacific security issues, war termination, and coercive diplomacy. Mastro's work also includes contributions to U.S. strategy in Asia. She is a Foreign Defense Policy Studies Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and continues to serve in the United States Air Force Reserve as a strategic planner for INDOPACOM J56. In 2016, she received the Individual Reservist of the Year Award for her dedication and contributions. Mastro has published extensively in major outlets such as Foreign Affairs, International Security, and the Journal of Strategic Studies among others. Her notable work includes the book 'Costs of Conversation: Obstacles to Peace Talks in Wartime' published by Cornell University Press in 2019. Mastro holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Stanford University and both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University.
