Biography

Oriol Gavalda Diaz joined the Department of Materials and the Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics as a lecturer in January 2024. He obtained his BEng from Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya and his MEng from the University of Bordeaux. He moved to the UK to pursue his PhD at the University of Nottingham within the Rolls Royce University Technology Centre. In 2018, he started a postdoctoral researcher position in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London. By 2021, he transitioned to an assistant professor role in the Composites Research Group at the University of Nottingham. His research interests focus on understanding ceramics and composites used in demanding applications, particularly related to failure mechanisms. His work emphasizes the use of a range of micro and nanoscale characterization and testing techniques to explore the microstructure and chemistry linked to failure processes. A significant part of his work has focused on materials used in transport and energy generation sectors, including ceramic matrix composites and layered zirconia materials.
