Biography

Osvaldo De Almeida is a Professor of Geriatric Psychiatry at the University of Western Australia (UWA). He completed his medical training in 1986 at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and obtained his PhD from the Institute of Psychiatry in London in 1993. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and has edited five books and published over 200 papers and book chapters. His research interests focus on identifying modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline, neuropsychology, and neuroimaging in mental disorders. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of clinical characteristics and risk factors related to late-onset schizophrenic symptoms and pioneered research in Alzheimer's disease among Latin American populations. He has been active in grant review and has delivered numerous invited lectures on mental health and ageing. His expertise also covers the epidemiology of psychiatric disorders and preventive medicine.
