Biography

Otto Muskens received his PhD in 2004 from the University of Utrecht and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at CNRS in Bordeaux, Philips Research in Eindhoven, and the AMOLF institute in Amsterdam. In 2009, he became the leader of the Integrated Nanophotonics Group at the University of Southampton, where he was promoted to a personal chair in 2014. He held the Debye visiting chair at the University of Utrecht in 2016 and became the head of the Quantum, Light, and Matter Department of Physics and Astronomy in 2020. Muskens' research interests comprise programmable photonic circuits utilizing ultralow loss phase change materials, infrared metasurfaces for radiative cooling and defense applications, and deep learning for AI-enabled nanophotonic design. His research team combines numerical modeling with AI-enabled design, development of advanced materials, nanofabrication, and cutting-edge optical experiments, contributing to a robust grant portfolio exceeding £19 million. Significant activities include development of new programmable photonic devices and various applications in aerospace and defense sectors.
