Biography

Owain Hanmer is a Research Associate at the University of the West of England, Bristol. With a completed PhD in 2021, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, he focused on the practices of commoning among retired urban gardeners. His research explores the intersections of urban gardening, communal living practices, and innovative governance. Prior to his current role, Hanmer served as a Research Fellow at Cardiff University, where he participated in a transdisciplinary project called Infuse, which aimed at developing practical social innovation projects for community development in collaboration with local government workers. His expertise lies in urban gardening, commons, commoning, and experimental governance, where he investigates how mundane everyday practices emerge in the unruly edges of market-driven states. His research interests also extend to the politics of retirement, food agriculture, and transformative community development.
