Biography
Dr. Owen Beck is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education. His research focuses on improving human walking and running performance through the study of biomechanics and its effects on human physiology. Dr. Beck began his academic journey at Humboldt State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. He then pursued his doctoral studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, concentrating on how prosthetic configurations affect the running economy and sprinting speed of athletes with leg amputations. His graduate research led him to participate in significant international court cases regarding the eligibility of athletes with limb amputations in Olympic track and field events. Following his Ph.D., he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, examining the impact of exoskeletons on muscle-tendon mechanics during walking, running, and reactive balance. Dr. Beck's work has received recognition through various awards, including the NIA F32 Postdoctoral Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health and a postdoctoral training fellowship from the McCamish Parkinson's Disease Innovation Program.
