Biography

Owen Holland is a Lecturer in Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of Edinburgh, having joined in 2022. His work focuses on culturally materialist approaches to literature and culture in Britain during the long nineteenth century. His recent monograph, 'Literature Revolution: British Responses to the Paris Commune 1871' (Rutgers University Press, 2022), investigates the literary responses to the Paris Commune, extending his previous scholarship on fin-de-siècle cultural politics and examining global contexts for the literary production in Victorian Britain. Holland's research encompasses a range of Victorian writers, including George Gissing, Henry James, H. G. Wells, and William Morris, analyzing their contributions within a wider socio-political framework. He previously taught at institutions such as Jesus College Oxford and University College London. Holland has also served as an editor for the 'William Morris Studies' journal and has organized various public scholarly events. His current research interests include the intersection of aesthetics and politics in utopian studies, as well as developing new projects on nineteenth-century heliotropic poetics and the relationship between nature and utopia in novelistic realism.
