Biography

Owen Nkoka is building an interdisciplinary research programme focused on understanding and addressing health inequalities and long-term conditions, specifically multimorbidity. His work integrates epidemiology, social determinants, and biological approaches to investigate the structural and biological factors that shape disease risk, progression, and outcomes. He leads the Healthy Lives Malawi Long-Term Conditions Cohort, a major population-based study designed to advance knowledge of chronic disease in low-income African settings. Owen serves on the steering committee of the African Population Cohorts Consortium and collaborates widely in Africa and the UK on multimorbidity and mental health research. Alongside his research, Owen plays an active role in training the next generation of researchers and is committed to building research capacity to contribute to sustainable scientific leadership in Africa.
