Biography

Owen M. Weller-Gibbs is a Professor of Metamorphic Petrology in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge. He focuses on the metamorphic rock record, aiming to enhance our understanding of tectonic processes through phase equilibria modeling. He completed his undergraduate studies in Natural Sciences with a specialization in Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge and obtained a DPhil in Earth Sciences from the University of Oxford in 2014. He conducted postdoctoral research at Nagoya University, Japan, and subsequently held a position as Visiting Fellow at the Geological Survey of Canada where he mapped the Canadian Arctic. Weller-Gibbs began his academic career as an Assistant Professor in 2017, advancing to Associate Professor in 2022 and then full Professor in 2025. His research encompasses the analysis of metamorphic rocks to decode evolutionary patterns in plate tectonics and assesses tectonic processes' viability. He has received the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for his ongoing research on the petrogenesis of alkaline-silicate magmatic systems. He teaches metamorphic petrology courses and supervises PhD students in relevant fields.
