Owen Witte received his undergraduate degree from Cornell and completed his M.D. at Stanford University. He joined the faculty at UCLA after completing postdoctoral research at MIT and currently holds the position of University Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics, while also serving as the Director Emeritus of the Eli & Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA. Dr. Witte has made significant contributions to the understanding of human leukemias, immune disorders, and epithelial cancer stem cells. His work includes the discovery of the tyrosine kinase activity of the ABL gene and the demonstration of BCR-ABL oncoproteins in human leukemias, which has had a practical impact leading to the development of kinase-targeted therapy for effective treatment of leukemias and cancers. Additionally, he co-discovered Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK), essential for normal B-lymphocyte development, whose mutations lead to X-linked agammaglobulinemia and immune deficiency. Dr. Witte's recent research has focused on defining stem cells and growth regulatory pathways in epithelial cancers, particularly in prostate cancer. He is recognized as an expert in the field and has extensive experience consulting within the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.
