Dr. Paivi Torkkeli

Biography

Paivi Torkkeli is a Professor specializing in physiology and biophysics at Dalhousie University. Her research focuses on molecular cellular mechanisms of mechanosensory transduction, particularly in relation to how organisms detect mechanical stimuli and how these stimuli are processed at the synapse. Her work encompasses various areas including sensory physiology, synaptic physiology, mechanotransduction, olfaction, and vision. Torkkeli employs advanced biophysical, electrophysiological, and molecular imaging techniques to explore these complex processes. Throughout her career, she has contributed extensively to the understanding of ion channels and neurotransmitter dynamics across multiple species, particularly in her investigations involving sensory neurons. Torkkeli is also known for her collaborative research efforts, as exemplified by her numerous co-publications in significant scientific journals. She holds degrees from the University of Oulu in Finland and a PhD from the University of Alberta.
