Palmer Taylor is the Sandra Monroe Trout Professor and the Founding Emeritus Dean of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego. His research has focused on molecular recognition principles through the use of spectroscopic physical methods and X-ray crystallography. Since the mid-1970s, Taylor has worked on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and acetylcholinesterase, with current interests in the structure and dynamics related to ligand design. His collaborative work with Barry Sharpless at The Scripps Research Institute has led to the development of selective cholinesterase inhibitors and reactivator antidotes for acetylcholinesterase targets. In addition, Taylor's studies into the structure-function relationship of post-synaptic adhesion proteins highlight his contributions to the field of neuropharmacology. His academic achievements include numerous awards, fellowships, and leadership roles, such as founding chair of the Department of Pharmacology and president of the American Society of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics. Taylor has significantly contributed to pharmacology education, teaching both medical and pharmacy students and co-authoring influential textbooks on drug action.
